Cake Decorating with Ms. Rutherford
Grades: K-5
Have you ever wondered how to make princess castle cakes or Angry Birds cookies? If so, this class is just for you! In this class you will not only learn how to bake all sorts of yummy treats, but how to decorate them as well. Students will begin their culinary journey by learning to use piping tools on wax paper, building up to decorating cookies, and finishing with a fully decorated cake that they can take home and enjoy with their families. Thinking Outside the Box
Grades 1-5
Do your children think they have all the answers? “Thinking Outside the Box” is just the right thing for them! This class gives children an opportunity to think on their feet and spend time in a wonderfully stimulating and creative environment. Using games and all sorts of hands-on activities , they tackle challenging problems, lead group brainstorm sessions, gather information from teammates, practice consensus/conflict resolution and problem solving, and lead their peers to final decisions. This class helps develop creativity and critical thinking, as well as team building, leadership, problem solving, conflict resolution, trust and perseverance skills. Most importantly, they will have fun while learning crucial concepts and skills for our new digital, increasingly complex and challenging world! Upcycled Art!
Grades: 3-5
This after school art enrichment experience will provide students with the opportunity to further explore their artistic talents. We will focus specifically on the artistic style that has come to be known as Upcycled Art. Utilizing recycled materials such as cardboard, newspaper, magazines and plastic bottles students will create new one of a kind sculptures, collages and 2D works of art. *Some materials will be provided to students, but students are encouraged to provide any recycled materials they would like to reimagine and utilize in their artwork.

Winter S.T.E.A.M. with Ms. Delmare

Students K-1 will explore the season of winter and the holidays within through fun and interactive S.T.E.A.M. activities. We will build igloos out of marshmallows, make snow storms in a jar, design parachutes for leprechauns and much more! Students will learn about science, technology, engineering, art and math and will have a “wintery” blast while doing so!

Band and String Club
Grades: 4-5
Join Glebe’s own Music Department Volunteer Evan Pollack known to the kids as “Mr.P.” for the perfect solution to making music practice regular and fun for your child! This is a music practice club closely tied to the Glebe music program that will help band and orchestra kids become more familiar with their instruments and also help them learn what they can do and achieve when they put their minds into it. This is a supplemental program based on music and games offered to 4th and 5th graders who are in band (brass, woodwinds, and percussion) and orchestra (string instruments).It will take what they are doing with the band director, emphasize the lessons, provide practice time, and make practice fun! There will be at least two performances — one for the school and one for the parents. Evan Pollack has been teaching music in Northern VA for twenty-seven years and has been at Glebe for the past ten.

The American Sign Language (ASL) Club is for students to learn about the deaf culture and how to communicate in American Sign Language. Some of the lessons will include: alphabet, numbers, days of the week, common phrases/sayings, food, animals, and many more! Karate II – Intermediate/Advanced, Yellow Belt or higher
Grades: K-5
This popular class is a disciplined introduction to the sport by Kaizen Karate. Your child will learn the beautiful art of karate while gaining safety and defensive skills in a respectful environment. The class will also emphasize the basic karate principles of focus, patience and self-discipline. Additionally, students must have sparring gear to attend this class. Basic sparring concepts will be taught during class time in a safe manner. Returning students will continue to work toward new belts. Parents should view the student handbook on the Kaizen Karate website for specific belt requirements for each level. This class will be 90 minutes in length and students must be a yellow belt or higher. (Instruction provided by Kaizen Karate)
