Hands-On Turtle Care
Grades: 2-4
Join the Glebe turtles, Oscar and Smirny, for some fun and adventure. As spring arrives, Oscar and Smirny wake up hungry. They have kept their stomachs empty for months, and they want to get moving. As temperatures rise above 60 degrees, we will be taking them outdoors and allowing them to choose their own fresh green things to eat: clover, dandelions, purslane! Much of our discussion is about reptiles in general, and how utterly different they are from us mammals. This class is a time for weather-watching, and for finding the best weedy green foods right in our own backyard. In the classroom, we will research, imagine, and draw the turtles in their home habitats of China and Siberia. From a turtle's perspective, what are the scientific meanings of words like: "instinct," "opportunity," and "cold-blooded"?
The class fee will go toward turtle food, habitat supplies, and Oscar & Smirny's next visit to the veterinarian.
